In September, a former lecturer who exposed the affair of Shincheonji leader Lee Man-hee filed a lawsuit against him for sexual assault by abuse of professional authority. This is sometimes referred to as a “power sex crime” because of its use of intangible power over the victim.
The accuser, former instructor Gong Hee-sook, stated:
“I will take the initiative to fight so that no one like me will be victimized again, and so that no one will be deceived by the SCJ doctrine and swindled out of life like me. The fraud of Shincheonji should be shut down, and I hope that the believers who are trapped in the illusion of eternal life will know the truth about Lee Man-hee and escape from Shincheonji.”
She joined Shincheonji in 1992 and has been an instructor since 1993. Her main task was to teach the doctrine to new members recruited under deceptive evangelism, after which she would worship with them and invite them to join. In 2016, she became a branch church leader in Sadang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul; however, after the coronavirus pandemic, she realized that Shincheonji was wrong and left the church around December 2022.
Regarding Lee Man-hee’s sexual crimes, she said:
“These are horrible facts that I don’t want to talk about, that I want to bury forever, that I want to erase from my memory.”
She added:
“(Lee Man-hee) was a person who was valued above all others because he was regarded as the promised pastor who appeared on earth according to the prophecy of the Bible when I was being educated, and he was the chairman of Shincheonji, so he was a person who could not be touched. I was in a position where I was subject to his authority and had to comply when he asked me to come.”
She described events beginning around 1996 when, while working as a lecturer and living in Yangjae-dong Center, she had her own room. After going out together, he would come to her room, claim he was tired, and insist on staying. Not daring to refuse because of his authority, she endured unwanted sexual advances that continued periodically for about six years (from 1997 to 2002). Despite her attempts to end the inappropriate relationship, he persisted—sending letters and even giving her a wedding ring he said he purchased in Gangwon-do.
She also revealed that she spent a significant portion of her childbearing years (from age 20 to 45) in full-time unpaid duty at Shincheonji, became a victim of sexual abuse by Lee Man-hee, and was unable to marry normally or raise a family. In September, she disclosed these allegations on YouTube, but Lee Man-hee did not apologize or atone. To prevent the congregation from leaving, Shincheonji has been conducting internal training that her allegations are false and fabricated, with no sign of repentance or improvement.
The allegation of sexual assault by abuse of professional authority is rooted in Shincheonji’s belief that its founder, Lee Man-hee, is the only person with God-like authority imbued with the spirit of Jesus. They claim that those who fall away from the Shincheonji faith will die or be crippled by seven demonic spirits; those who join will be saved and live a thousand years of physical immortality on earth; and those who do not join or who leave will go to hell.
For more than 30 years, she was in a state of psychological subordination that prevented her from making free choices about her personal life. Using his religious authority, Lee Man-hee exploited her helpless state to crush and sexually abuse her for about six years, thoroughly destroying her normal life as a woman. It was only after she left Shincheonji on December 27, 2022, that she realized the criminal nature of the exploitation and filed the lawsuit.
