When and where was Lee Manhee Anointed?

This page explores Shincheonji’s claim regarding Lee Man-hee’s ordination in the context of Revelation 1. It examines the timing, location, and theological implications of this claim, alongside counterarguments for a balanced perspective.

The Background of Lee Manhee

Lee Manhee claims to be the “Comforter in Flesh” or the “Promised Pastor of the New Testament,” asserting that he received the correct understanding of the Bible and the fulfillment of Revelation through an angel acting on behalf of God. According to Lee, this event occurred in the spring of 1980, when the angel delivered the “open scroll” of Revelation and explained its contents to him.

Lee describes the flow of divine revelation leading to him as follows:

God → Jesus → Angels (Comforter Spirit) → General President (Comforter Flesh) → Servants (144,000 + Great Multitude in White).

Prior to receiving the “open scroll,” Lee claims that Jesus appeared to him in 1977, anointing him to write letters to the Tabernacle Temple, a “church” he interprets as representing all of Christianity, including the seven churches mentioned in Revelation. In 1979, Lee began writing these letters to the seven messengers of the Tabernacle Temple after moving to Gwacheon, South Korea.

Changed Ordination Locations and Dates

Changed Date: Spring of 1980

According to the The Complete Commentary on the Book of Revelation, 1986:

To the church that has the same hope in the kingdom of heaven, I write to you in the name of the Lord Jesus, asking for faith, grace, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ. The author of this booklet is an uneducated, rural farmer who does not belong to any denomination and has no religious affiliation. He simply writes in the book what he has seen and heard according to the instructions of the Holy Spirit. On May 10, 1957, I left this secular world, met the Holy Spirit on the way to the monastery, pledged loyalty with a blood oath, and was led to ○○ Church. Three years later, I was abandoned by this church and became a rural farmer again. Then, in the spring of 1980, he was ordained by the Holy Spirit, who came in a cloud, and received a book and a staff. He was led by the Holy Spirit and showed him the reality of the words written in the book, namely, the secrets of the organization of God’s messengers and the secrets of the organization of Satan’s messengers. This book was written according to the instructions of the Holy Spirit to be written and sent to the churches, so this book was not created by human design, knowledge, or research. This is what the Holy Spirit speaks through me to the churches. Whoever has ears will hear what the Holy Spirit says, believe it, and keep it. You will see that this is a revelation in which the secrets of the Book of Revelation, God’s book sealed with seven seals, have now been opened and revealed to the world. Therefore, the commentary in this book is true and is a new song of the eternal gospel that explains the words of the way prophesied throughout the Bible, including the Book of Announcements, and what the author saw, based on six principles. I tell everyone who reads the words of this book that the words of prophecy are the will of the Lord who died and the prophets and apostles promised us to see, hear, believe, and keep them. The people who must see and believe in the real thing that has been accomplished according to the words of this inducement are we who will be saved.

It also mentions that he received a book and a staff during his ordination.

Shincheonji’s former official website and promotional materials corroborated that Lee Man-hee was ordained in 1980 and authored this letter at that time.

Change #2: Ordained at the Tabernacle Temple

The True Story of Revelation, 1988 reveals that the place of ordination was the first tabernacle, the Tabernacle Temple (in Gwacheon):

Change #3: Ordained at Chengdo in 1979

(Excerpt from sermon recording) : The place of ordination was changed. (Gwacheon Tabernacle Temple → Cheongdo)

During the sermon he mentioned: “I was ordained in 1979 and moved to Gwacheon. (Excerpt from sermon recording) However, he corrected himself and stated that the place of ordination was actually in Cheongdo, not Gwacheon.

Translation:

“And so, meeting these people and meeting at this tabernacle like this, if you ask when this was, it was 1979. 1979… These are the events that took place back then. Starting from that time, time began to flow, and as time passed while I was here, I didn’t go down to the countryside. Because of that, our grandmother (presumed to be the first wife, Mrs. Yoo) came up to find me. Haha, she came up looking for me like that. If we look at the beginning of this history, it’s a long story, but the real beginning of this history was in 1979. 1979.

At first, when I was making the gun and going to the mountain, that person dressed in white did not lay hands on me but just stood there and spoke. However, in 1979, there was laying on of hands on my head and a command was given. That’s when it all started, and I went up to Seoul. And like this, time has flowed and flowed and flowed, hasn’t it? Amen. That’s how it has flowed.”

Change #4: Ordained in 1977

The book Creation of Heaven and Earth, 2007, page 219, states him as having been ordained in the autumn of 1977. (Location: Cheongdo)

Translation: In the fall of 1977, the author received a revelation similar to Chapter 1 of the Book of Revelation and came to the first tabernacle (tabernacle temple) in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do. (At this time, Satan Nicolaitan had already entered.) In 1979, he wrote a letter to the seven messengers of the first tabernacle, received a small book from an angel in early 1980, was arrested while testifying the word in the fall of 1980, and came out in 1981. , in the winter of 1981, I went into the mountains for the first time to write the book ‘天地創造’ (this was due to the poor writing of the ghostwriter and Due to a mistake, it was not published as intended and ended in failure), there was a severe war in late 1982 and 1983, and in 1984, the Shincheon Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, was founded and declared. The events of Chapter 11 have already been accomplished as recorded, and the trumpet of final salvation continues to sound.

The fact that the location and date of Lee Man-hee’s supposed ordination or anointing have been altered multiple times raises significant questions about Shincheonji’s claim of “physical fulfillment.” For an event as pivotal as the leader’s anointing—central to Shincheonji’s theology—one would expect consistency and clarity. The repeated changes cast doubt on the reliability of their narrative and suggest a retrospective attempt to align historical events with their theology.

Understanding the Alterations in Context

Shincheonji justifies such changes under the concept of “physical fulfillment being established,” arguing that new details or revelations are clarified over time as God’s plan unfolds. This perspective aligns with their broader practice of claiming reinterpretation or progressive revelation to adjust inconsistencies in doctrine. However, the lack of a stable narrative undermines the credibility of the event.

The gradual pushing back of the date suggests an effort to align historical claims with Shincheonji’s theological framework. Their teachings often reinterpret past events to fit their narrative of prophecy and fulfillment, framing inconsistencies as part of an evolving understanding. Similarly, the change in location further complicates the reliability of the narrative. If the event were as divinely significant as Shincheonji claims, one would expect the details to remain consistent over time.

The change in location adds another layer of uncertainty to the reliability of the narrative. If the event were truly as divinely significant as claimed, the details surrounding it would be expected to remain consistent and unchanging.

Where was Lee Manhee from 1977 – 1980?

Lee Man-hee was one of the twelve apostles under Baek Man-bong (spiritual name : Solomon), one of the seven messengers(aka betrayer) who apostatised from 1977-1980, When Lee Man-hee claims to be ordained.

Fulfillment of the Church of Sardis – Baek’s Recreation Sect

In the past, it was taught that the physical fulfillment involved Lee Man-hee going to Baek Man-bong’s Recreation Church (interpreted as the reality of the Sardis Church in Revelation 3). However, this narrative has since changed. It is now taught as if he went to Baek Man-bong’s Construction Labor Meeting, and currently, it is no longer taught at all.

In Korean, the term used is “역군,” which refers to a deacon who resides in the church and performs construction work. Lee Man-hee lived this kind of life at the Olive Tree Church and the Tabernacle Temple. For lack of a more precise term in English, “construction labor” is used here.

This change is likely due to the implausibility of Lee Man-hee, who was supposedly ordained in 1977, 1979, or 1980, serving Baek Man-bong as “Lord,” one of the seven stars who apostatized, and believing in a time-limited apocalypse.

Below are excerpts from some of SCJ’s training materials on physical fulfillment, including sermons by Lee Man-hee and former 7-lead educator Kim Yong-rok during the training sessions.

Baek Man-bong did not attend worship services or teach the Word.

After coming to Gyeonggi in the fall of 1978, he entered Baekmanbong (Sardis Church).

The soldiers who were in the first tent had a meeting under Baekmanbong.

This is a collection of testimonies from people who were with Lee Man-hee at the time. They all say the same thing: He served Mr.Baek as Lord.
